This week, we are excited to resume our live-streamed concerts from the Great Hall with a solo recital by pianist, Alexander Soares. Following his London debut at the Royal Festival Hall, Alexander has garnered a reputation as a pianist who combines “huge intensity” (The Telegraph) with “diamond clarity and authority” (BBC Radio 3). Rising to international attention in 2015 after winning the Gold Medal in the prestigious Royal Overseas League Competition, he has performed in major venues and festivals across the U.K., Europe and United States, and is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3, France Musique and SWR2, Germany. Alexander signed with Rubicon Classics in 2019.
His programme of twentieth century piano music includes Bridge’s Piano Sonata, first performed on 15th October 1925 by Myra Hess. It is a turbulent work written in dedication to the memory of a promising young musician killed on the Western Front, his sorrow and outrage at the carnage of the First World War. It is also among the most striking contributions of any British composer to the repertoire of twentieth-century piano music, alongside examples by John Ireland, Arnold Bax and Arthur Bliss.
You can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home, via our Lunchtime Concert Live Stream.
