During the talk David shared his experience developing the Cambridge Integrated Clerkship at Harvard Medical School and the lessons to be learned in developing the longitudinal integration model.
Imperial is a place on the frontier of a very important change in medical education.
– Dr David Hirsh
David described how longitudinal integrated clerkships (LICs) are transforming clinical education worldwide. The LIC model is grounded in educational theory and principles derived from the science of learning and evidence based education.
During the talk David discussed the case for change and the rationale that drove the wholesale redesign of the clinical year from traditional blocks to an LIC framework. He explored at length the underpinnings and structure of the Cambridge Integrated Clerkship and the literature and data that inform the model.
It was a pleasure and privilege to host David at Imperial and to hear him share some of his research outcomes.
– Professor Simone Buitendijk
Vice-Provost (Education)
David said: “Imperial is a place on the frontier of a very important change in medical education that I predict will be not only an important one for Imperial and the UK but will also make a mark on the world.”
The talk was part of the Perspectives in Education series of lectures, hosted by Imperial’s Education Development Unit. The programme is an occasional lecture series devoted to promoting discussion about ideas in education across the international higher education sector.
Professor Simone Buitendijk, Vice-Provost (Education) said: “David Hirsh is a world-renowned expert in educational transformation. It was a pleasure and privilege to host him at Imperial and to hear him share some of his research outcomes at what is such an important time in the transformation of our own education.
“As we move forward with our new Learning and Teaching Strategy it is this kind of evidence-based education practice that will help shape Imperial’s approach to its own learning practices.”
