Students build autonomous robots for mock bomb disposal challenge

Students in the Mechatronics lab with the robot

Third and fourth year students took part in a mock bomb disposal challenge for their Embedded C for Microcontrollers elective module.

The brief of the project involved a scenario in which a suspicious, infrared-emitting device had been discovered in the Mechanical Engineering foyer.

Working in pairs, students had to develop fully autonomous robots that could enter a cordoned off area around the device, find the device, retrieve a disarm code stored on the device itself and return the code outside the cordon.

Photos of the robots attempting to complete the task can be found on the department’s Flickr account.
