Professor Jonathan Haskel from the Business School has been appointed to a new role at the Office for National Statistics.

He has been appointed as the new chair of the National Statistician’s Stakeholder Advisory Panel on Consumer Price Statistics (APCP). Professor Haskel will take up this new position on 8 May, whilst continuing his remit as Chair in Economics at Imperial College Business School. The ONS appointment will be for an initial period of three years.

The Office for National Statistics is responsible for collecting, analysing and disseminating statistics about the UK's economy, society and population. The APCP provides independent advice to the National Statistician on consumer price inflation to ensure these statistics meet the needs of users and serve the public. Consumer price inflation is the Bank of England’s target and is used to uprate pensions, benefits and many other prices.

"As the new APCP Chair, I look forward to helping the ONS fulfill its mission to provide high quality data that improves people’s lives and gives important insights into the state of the UK economy.”  Professor Jonathan Haskel Chair in Economics

Reacting to the news of his appointment, Professor Haskel said: “Consumer price inflation is a key determinant of economic wellbeing. As the new APCP Chair, I look forward to helping the ONS fulfill its mission to provide high quality data that improves people’s lives and gives important insights into the state of the UK economy.”

Commenting on the appointment, ONS Chief Economist Grant Fitzner said: "We are honoured to welcome Professor Jonathan Haskel as new chair of the National Statistician’s Advisory Panel on Consumer Price Statistics. Our current programme of transforming consumer price statistics will benefit immeasurably from his extensive economic experience and knowledge.”

Professor Haskel’s main research interests are in productivity, innovation, intangible investment and growth. He has held a wide range of roles outside of Imperial – most recently as an external member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee. He has written two books: Capitalism without Capital: The Rise of the Intangible Economy and Restarting the Future: How to Fix the Intangible Economy.

He was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2018. In 2017, he was awarded the Indigo Prize, a new economics prize that celebrates radical and creative thinking in how to measure the modern economy. He was previously a non-Executive Director of the UK Statistics Authority and a panel member of the Competition and Markets Authority.
