More specifically, we are currently seeking to recruit five Ph.D. candidates to commence in October 2022 to work on research projects in the areas of transportation and mobility; energy; food and health; and in circular business models. We are also seeking two post-docs to support the five doctoral candidates.
We are also seeking to appoint two 2.5-year post-docs positions to support these activities.
Ideal candidates will have a passion for the environment and social justice; a driving ambition to explore the intersection between digital technologies and human behaviours; and have outstanding records of academic achievement.

Tyre emissions due to natural process of tyre wear are likely to become a major concern for regulators worldwide in the next few years. While efforts are underway to understand the tyre abrasion process, and to develop active systems to manage this process, the problem of developing models to predict the aggregate picture of a network of vehicles at the scale of a city, has yet to be considered. Our objective in this project is to develop new digital interventions, and accompanying business models, that can be used to promote circularity in the manner tyres and both manufactured and used in our cities.

The transition to zero emissions mobility is being powered to a large extent by advances in battery technology. Significant impediments to this transition arise from end-of-life battery disposal, the need for vehicle mode compliance, and the tracing of energy to power these batteries. The focus of this project will be to develop the tools and technologies to empower ethical business models that will both enable circular operation of vehicle batteries, and the development of new ownership and business models that are both fair and ethical renumeration as these batteries are used in our cities. We shall also explore the development if energy trading mechanisms as part of this project.

We are seeking to develop the infrastructure, technologies, and analytics that will empower circular behaviour. Operating at the interface of digital ledger technology, digital twins, and feedback control theory, the successful candidates will be responsible for develop tools that will enable servitization at scale. The specific focus of this project shall be to develop technologies to promote personalised interventions to enable new forms of digital nudges, and mechanisms to accelerate behavioural change.

We are also seeking to appoint a two further Ph.D. candidates as part of an open collaborative call under the TZP banner. Both candidates will be hosted in the I3 lab at the Dyson School of Design Engineering, but will be co-supervised by academics in departments other than the DSDE. Details of the call will be published shortly on the TZP website. Domain areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following: Environment; Health; Agritech and fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs).
