I am a final year PhD student at the Control and Power group in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Imperial College London. I am from Nigeria and enjoy going to the theatre.
Interview with Al-Amin
Hear from Al-Amin, who is using machine learning applications to help make sure our power stays on as we transition into sustainable energy sources
Education
GCSE and A-Level (or equivalent): West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
Degrees:
• BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria
• MSc in Future Power Networks, Imperial College London
• PhD Electrical Engineering (on-going), Imperial College London
Detail about Al-Amin
My research
I investigate machine learning applications for supporting decisions in power systems operations. My current focus is on generating good quality artificial data to train machine learning models to be robust and make less errors.
My inspiration
Power systems are integral to supporting modern societies. My passion for problem solving and the amazing people I have met along the way inevitably lead me to this area. Especially my primary school maths teacher Mr Olatunji, who nurtured my love for maths and the sciences at a young age.
Who is your STEM hero?
Pre-modern era - Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi, Persian polymath, who developed algorithms. Algorithms are at the core of the digital world.
Post-modern era - Nikola Tesla, Serbian American inventor and engineer, who developed the alternating-current power system that provides electricity to our homes and industries.
Most significant discovery/invention?
The Scientific Method, the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation. This process forms the basis for all scientific discoveries. It is increasingly more important in our post-truth era, where emotions and personal beliefs can influence public opinion more than facts.
Career options after study
- Founder at a start-up
- Researcher at an energy company
- Consultant at an energy organisation
- Academic at a university
My hobbies
Going to the theatre, travelling and dancing.
