The Hydrology Research Group is a based in the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering section.

Our mission is to generate hydrological knowledge that supports evidence-based decision making on water and environmental resources, to tackle global challenges such as climate change, urbanization, and poverty reduction. For this, we implement cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research and innovation in engineering hydrology.

We focus particularly on integrated systems approaches to solving water-related problems, explicitly incorporating the complexity and interactions that are inherent to human-water systems. We have pioneered several innovations in water management, such as the use of complex-systems modelling, building robust sensor networks for data collection in remote and harsh environments, promoting the use of novel geophysical investigation methods and leveraging citizen science to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

    Adrian's research is related to the movement of water and contaminants in soil and groundwater and their impact on water resources, the natural environment and human health. He is also Course Director of the MSc in Hydrology and Water Resources Management, which has been run for over 60 years.

    Wouter's research focuses on the impact of environmental change on water resources, and the resulting implications for water resources management and sustainable development. He works extensively in developing regions where the link between water and poverty often leads to significant human hardship.

    Cedo's research areas include quantification of interactions of water and other urban eco-systems for innovative urban planning for reduction of negative impacts of climate change and weather extremes. For his achievement in over 30 years of collaboration with ENPC Paris, France, he was awarded the title Doctor Honoris Causa.
