AI driven robotic catheter system for ultrasound guided endovascular surgery
Endovascular procedures, such as endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and endovascular coiling represent the pinnacle of the state-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques for treating cardiovascular diseases.
However, despite their clinical success, most procedures are performed under the golden imaging standard of Fluoroscopy, which is an ionising imaging technique that poses risk for the patient and the clinician. The task of reducing and eliminating radiation is of
great importance for the NHS and the society at large, as it reduces further medical complications, saves costs, and improves safety. With this in mind, the main goal of this research project is to replace Fluoroscopy with Ultrasound for sur gical guidance, create an intelligent robotic catheterisation system for traversing a torturous vasculature, and an ergonomic visualisation software to facilitate real-time monitoring of the instruments and anatomy.
