I’m working on the NextCOMP project. The project aims to do a full scale redesign of composites for compression. My work revolves around designing of hierarchical nano-scale structures inspired by natural nacre, as a coating for carbon fibres. My goal is to suppress or reduce the kink band formation by toughening and tweaking the fibre-matrix interphase which will allow absorption and dissipation of more energy under compressive load. |

My research is based on sustainable production of carbon fibres from lignin. Fibres are produced via wet-spinning from a three-component system containing an ionic liquid (a multi-solvent), carbon nanotubes (for graphitisation and improved mechanical properties) and lignin (readily available providing a high carbon content). Optimisation of this process will enable high quality lignin carbon fibres with increased tensile strength and improved fibre morphology. |
