An international MR biomarker consortium-based approach for clinical research, particularly engaging middle-income countries is essential to reduce the burden of neonatal encephalopathy.

Our research program is focused on perinatal asphyxia related brain injury (neonatal encephalopathy). Worldwide, approximately one million babies die every year from this condition and a far higher number develop lifelong disabilities. We are using magnetic resonance biomarkers and transcriptomics to understand the nature of the brain injury in these babies and to develop personalised therapies.
