Welcome to the Structures Section at Imperial College London. The Section is part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and carries out research and teaching in a wide range of structures related areas. We have a long history of conducting internationally leading research for research councils, government and industry. Our research largely focuses on linking improvements in fundamental understanding to direct industrial application and the development of guidance suitable for engineering practice in the built environment. There are typically more than 50 PhD students enrolled in our PhD programme in the Section. Research activities cover the behaviour and design of new structures as well as the management of ageing structures and infrastructure. We are involved in teaching mechanics, analysis and practice in the undergraduate programme in Civil Engineering. The Section also runs a vibrant cluster of one-year MSc courses in Concrete Structures, Structural Steel Design, Earthquake Engineering and General Structural Engineering.
Our links with industry and professional organisations are extensive. Most or our research is carried out in collaboration with industrial partners. Our academics have taken leading roles in learned societies and professional associations. Recent examples include the President of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) and Chair of the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED). We are actively involved in the development of International standards, most notably in the Structural Eurocodes on concrete, steel and seismic design. In the last five years, the Section contributed over 200 publications in refereed journals, delivered more than 30 keynote and plenary lectures in international conferences worldwide, and was awarded more than 20 prizes by various institutions and organisations. Intellectually challenging advisory work for industry, carried out through Imperial’s consulting arm (Imperial Consultants), also extends our significant engagement with the profession.
This website provides a brief introduction to our activities. If you would like to find out more about any aspect of our work, please get in touch.
