The Surface properties of Particulate Materials and their Caking Behaviour
Project overview:
This project is designed to tackle powder caking, a problem of high industrial relevance. The handling and storage of bulk powders is common in many industries such as detergent, pharmaceutical, bulk chemical and food. A lot of materials are susceptible to changes with time that may lead to bulk powder caking, resulting in an unmanageable powder and process downtime, which impacts upon profitability. The project is sponsored and carried out in close collaboration with BASF in Ludwigshafen.
The PhD student on this project, Alessandra Hausmann, is based at Imperial College London but is also spending time at BASF R&D in Ludwigshafen. She and her project, are part of the Advanced Characterisation of Materials Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). CDT is a joint venture between Imperial College London, University College London and Trinity College Dublin and so is able to offer a suite of state-of-the-art characterisation facilities and accompanying expertise.
