Important
When appointing staff, it’s important to choose the right type of contract. Consider the hours, employment duration, funding source, project type, and contracts given to others in similar roles.
Temporary contract types
Casual workers help meet temporary demands on an “as and when” basis for up to 26 weeks. They aren’t required to accept work and can turn it down.
If their engagement extends beyond 26 weeks, a more formal contract is needed.
Please see Hiring department guidance page for casual workers for more information.
Short-term contracts (less than 6 months) can be requested by submitting a Short term and named researcher's contract request to HR Staff Hub.
So that your request can be processed quickly, please include:
- Completed contract request form with finance/research services approval
- Passport/Right to work documents
- A minimum of 2 references, normally to include the applicant's present/most recent employer and covering at least 3 years immediately preceding joining Imperial
- Academic certificates (if applicable to role)
- CV/Application form
Once this has been processed, the individual and their line manager will be sent a contract. You will need to collect their bank details and send them directly to payroll
You can use zero-hours contracts for irregular work patterns that last over 26 weeks. It is important to ensure workers know when they are likely to be needed e.g., during known busy periods. Zero hours workers are paid monthly via submission of IC Pay 8C forms to Payroll.
