Physics 2023 Nobel Prize Winner Talk on Attosecond Physics
Anne L’Hullier, one of the 2023 Physics Nobel Prize Winners, is coming to Imperial to give a talk on Attosecond Physics on 26th November at 11am in Blackett Building Lecture Theatre 1.

This is a first come, first seated event. Once Lecture Theatre 1 is full, extra seating will be available in Blackett Lecture Theatre 3 where the event will be live-streamed.

New 100 seat space opens at the Abdus Salam Library
Library Services are pleased to announce the opening of a new Group Study Space on level 4 of the Abdus Salam Library. The area features over 100 study spaces in an array of different types of furniture such as 2, 4 and 6-seater meeting pods, standing desks and moveable furniture.
Whilst the main study furniture is bespoke and brand-new, we were very happy to be able to re-use a number of reclaimed whiteboards, a printer and a table and benches in the ‘tea-point’.
The ‘tea-point’ also includes a hot water boiler and cold vending machines.
Later in the year we will be adding to this space by opening two bookable group study rooms on the same floor.

Imperial Energy Projects
Nicholas, the head of the Imperial Energy Projects; these are projects that the Imperial Energy Society Committee has designed for the student body to work on, with some internal and others with external partners such as Rolls Royce.

These projects are an excellent opportunity for physics students to learn about a topic of interest, build up their soft and hard skillsets, and are generally a great accompaniment alongside their course.
I have included an FAQ below which will hopefully pre-emptively respond to the main questions we have received thus far.
FAQ:
How qualified do I need to be to join a project?
As long as you have a keen interest in a project, it's appropriate for you to join the team. Each team is there to innovate and share knowledge, meaning that if you don't have experience in the field, you will be able to quickly learn, and if you are familiar, you will have the opportunity to strengthen your understanding by explaining concepts to others.
What is the time commitment?
You can take varying responsibility within your team, depending on your ability to commit time, throughout the year; the average weekly commitment is 3 hours.
Graduate Analyst
The Company
Vega Insight provides a unique view on commodity markets through data analytics and
machine learning. Founded by a team of data scientists, machine learning engineers,
market experts and traders, with a growing international customer base consisting of energy producers, utilities, banks and investment funds.
The Role
The position is open for a graduate analyst to join our team and work on development of our analytics platform and production of market analysis reports. We are seeking to expand our current focus on European energy markets to cover multiple commodities across different sectors. Your input will directly assist the expansion of our product offering.
Skills
• Quantitative background with experience in data analysis and financial modelling.
• Basic familiarity with economics and commodity markets (useful but not essential).
• Preferred tech stack is Excel/Tableau/SQL/Python
Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, preferably in a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Economics, but we welcome applications from all educational backgrounds with demonstrated analytical capacity.
Details
Work mode: We are currently working remotely with available office space in London.
Pay: £30,000
Duration: 3-month fixed contract (permanent contract subject to satisfying initial review).

Opportunity to help with GroundBIRD remote telescope observations
We are looking for around five students who are interested in helping with remote observations with the GroundBIRD telescope. This is a Cosmic Microwave Background telescope observing from Tenerife, and we particularly need help with observations in the UK afternoon/evenings (approx. 2pm-8pm). It is a unique opportunity to engage in observing with a research telescope. You will be watching the telescope status remotely during observations and, if the weather gets bad, stopping observations as needed. No previous experience is needed. The role is voluntary (unpaid), can be done from any location, and only requires checking conditions every ~15 minutes (more or less often depending on weather forecasts), so can be done in parallel to studying etc. Contact Mike Peel at m.peel@imperial.ac.uk for more information.

Fire evacuation assembly points for Blackett & Huxley
Dear all,
Thank you for the feedback provided following the triggering of the fire alarm in the Blackett Building last Tuesday. Please see below for the assembly points that should be used when evacuating from Blackett (points A or B) and Huxley (points A or C). You must use the nearest escape route which may not be the same route you normally use. For example, in Blackett there are the east and west stairwells which connect floors 0-7, in addition to the main stairwell which connects all floors. Always use the break glass to release exit doors and keep roads clear in case emergency vehicles need access.
