We're taking a snapshot of how much our community is currently moving so that we can continue to improve your facilities and services.
Our goal is to enable every member of our community to reach the Chief Medical Officer's recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. To do this, we need to guarantee a high-class user experience with commensurate facilities, services and programmes. We also need to reach people who have found it difficult to integrate physical activity into their daily lives and, in the process, make it feel more approachable and enjoyable.
To make sure these programmes and facilities meet our community's needs, we need to regularly check in to understand the community’s current levels of activity. That is why we’re asking 'How Active Are You?’ as a quick, annual check-in, so that we can keep what works going and, crucially, understand how we can motivate further progress.
Why is it important?
In 2022, we launched 'The Future Of...' Physical Activity and Sport strategy which outlined our ambitious targets until 2027. Our vision was, and remains, to make every member of the Imperial community more active through five key areas: Physical Wellbeing, Active, Active Curriculum, Infrastructure and Imperial Athletes.
There is no longer an argument as to the transformative effect physical activity can have on our wellbeing and work. However, there is still so much to be done in supporting people to make positive lifestyle changes that can increase their activity levels.
That is why it is so vital for us to hear from as many people as possible across the Imperial community to understand how active you are and what we can do to support you to take up more physical activity.
Last year, your responses helped us shape what we do to better support you. In response to that, we have:
- Provided women-only and LGBTQIA+ sessions to support inclusion and prevent feelings of being out of place in the gym environment
- Introduced Move Online, our free online fitness platform, to improve accessibility, affordability and convenience of facilities
- Offered incentives and schemes to increase participation in physical activity including Imperial’s Big Step Challenge, making Just Move free, growing our Imperial Leagues and launching Move Online
- Ongoing work to open Queensgate and improve the South Kensington traffic model to make entering campus by bicycle easier
- Delivered individual sessions to departments around Imperial and aways days to support a change in campus culture that promotes physical activity
Have your say this year. The survey should only take a couple of minutes to complete and you will be entered into a prize draw to win £500. Any thoughts you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
