Imperial's new Wi-Fi will be faster with improved security and reliability, enabling the university to deliver the digital campus of the future. We have outlined the core benefits below.
Capacity and futureproofing
The technology is reliable in high-density environments, such as libraries, large lecture theatres and spaces where large numbers of students gather e.g. the Junior Common Room.
It can handle large numbers of connected devices at any given time, preparing Imperial for increasing numbers of people connecting to the Wi-Fi.
Using AI and machine learning
The new Wi-Fi technology uses AI to monitor and analyse user and device behaviour and dynamically adjust settings so that devices are always connected to the best performing accessing points, resulting in a faster and better experience for anyone connected to the Wi-Fi.
It also utilises AI and machine learning algorithms to automate the operations, which allows for faster and better troubleshooting and optimises the performance of the Wi-Fi automatically.
Security
The new Wi-Fi includes security features to protect against threats and attack. It can detect and respond to anomalies in real time, allowing us to identify and mitigate security risks.
The new technology is managed via the cloud allowing network administrators to monitor and manage the network from anywhere. The AI technology can detect and resolve network issues in real time, reducing the need for engineers to carry out manual troubleshooting.
Data
We have carried out extensive on-site surveys of all spaces where the new Wi-Fi is being rolled out to ensure the best possible experience for those connected. The new Wi-Fi uses asset and location tracking to provide optimal location-based services.
With the extensive data that the technology collects, we will be able to make data-led, smart decisions about connectivity, improving the experience for everyone.
