The Next Generation Neural Interfaces (NGNI) Lab supports fundamental neuroscience and the translation of therapies for neurological health through creating and advancing innovative electronics.
Our research is creating new research tools for neuroscience, and bioelectronic systems that enable continuous, minimally obtrusive monitoring and new interventions to improve outcomes in people living with neurological conditions. The scope of our research encompasses the full breadth of medical device technologies that sense human physiology and behaviour and provide the opportunity to intervene. These include implantable systems, devices for intra- and peri-operative monitoring, and remote sensing technologies capturing physiological, behavioural, and environmental parameters. Devices can intervene using a direct interface to the human body, or remotely through an external device, carer, or clinician.
Our technical expertise includes low power integrated circuit design, embedded systems, implantable electronics, microelectronics and microsystems technologies, neuroscience research platforms, active implantable medical devices, biosensing using ultra-wideband radar.
Our current projects are targeting neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, drug-resistant epilepsy, and dementia.
