MedTechAccelerator – who we are

The MedTech Accelerator is a Wellcome Trust funded support programme for Imperial Academics, Imperial clinical Academics and ECRs who want to translate their research into medical technology products or clinical applications, and which greatly benefits from being part of a large, established and very rich MedTech and entrepreneurial ecosystem at Imperial College.

Key actors within the ecosystem are illustrated below (Figure 1). We align with and complement other programme and services, for the benefit of the projects we support. We are integrated to the Enterprise division (at the Enterprise Lab) and share resources with colleagues at the MedTech Superconnector. Under the Academic Leadership of Prof Jeffers and Prof AMJ Bull, we also benefit from our complementary with Wellcome funded MedTechOne programmes, greatly leveraging the academic leadership and expertise in the MedTech Foundation (focused on training and resource development for ECRs) and MedTech Collaborative (focusing on supporting clinical adoption) streams through MedTechONE Executive Management Board.

The Accelerator programme is closely aligned with the DTPrime programme, focusing on commercialisation of Imperial Deep Technology research for medical technologies. In addition, Imperial College hosts the NIHR BRC Biomedical Engineering Theme and the NIHR London IVD Cooperative, with whom we partner with the aim of fostering collaborations between the Trust clinicians and the academic engineers and scientists.

What we do - MedTech Accelerator Focus

Funded by the Wellcome Trust, The MedTech Accelerator helps de-risk Imperial College MedTech projects which have a high translational potential.
We run competitive calls for managed funding (see below), for MedTech projects with high translation potential. The Accelerator focuses on increasing the technology readiness levels of pre-clinical selected research & development projects developing medical technology innovations at Imperial College. But this can not be pursued in isolation of customer and market research - the technology must be attractive to a customer and answer an unmet clinical need. Plus, securing further funding is key to supporting the lengthy medtech development journey, and in MedTech, we also have to consider the Regulatory and reimbursement barriers, the development team needs to understand how this may affect technical decisions. Finally, development of entrepreneurship skills is key to success.

Aligning all of those factors is quite complex, especially for advanced technologies arising for years of research, and also because these factors are dependent of each other’s. The good news is that there is a lot of support for MedTech Entrepreneurs at Imperial College, including the MDDE MRes, BSC in Biomedical Technology Ventures, MedTech SuperConnector, NIHR BRC, NIHR London IVD Cooperative, and of course the other Wellcome-funded streams of support at MedTechOne.

During the Accelerator programme, considering those factors, we help selected MedTech project teams establish their development action plan, including TRL based milestones, and in close discussion with the technology transfer office (the Industry Partnership and Commercialisation team), with the ultimate goal of increasing the attractiveness of the proposition and ability for the team to engage with potential customers, and funding application goals.

We do this through our project management function: we navigate the projects we support through the medtech translation journey, signposting to internal and external programmes at the appropriate time We also have quality/regulatory expertise and a Quality Management System (QMS) (shown in Figure 2). for Design and Development of medical devices within our Team which we use to support the projects, with a level of support adapted to the project’s TRL (see Figure 3) and RRL (regulatory readiness level). The latter is a tool that we have developed and are trialling.

Through our Foundation and Collaborative streams, colleagues at the NIHR IVD Cooperative and the newly formed NIHR BRC Bioengineering Theme, we are also able to support clinical translation focused projects. Importantly, we also encourage the entrepreneurs to participate in Entrepreneurship development programmes, in particular the Imperial led MedTech Superconnector programme.

The accelerator programme is based on two previous successful pilot models, ran at Centre level, which have generated 4 Imperial College Start-ups, 4 RAEng Enterprise Fellowships, and led to more than £3.3m in translational funding being raised for projects over 4 years. We have expanded the model, to encompass a wider gamut of clinical application areas across College.

How to engage with us

Ad hoc- You can engage with any member of the team, for an ad-hoc conversation about your MedTech translation journey. For internal or external translational MedTech projects applications, our team can be costed in your grant application, so that we can provide more in-depth support.
