Dr Winston Wong Jnr

Imperial alumni are invited to join an important discussion with  Pantelis Georgiou (Professor of Biomedical Electronics) and alumnus Dr Winston Wong Jr (PhD Electrical and Electronics Engineering 2010), the chairman and managing director at Credo Diagnostics Biomedical.

As restrictions ease and international travel resumes in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, novel diagnostic technologies will be essential to prevent future outbreaks and protect lives. Imperial researchers and alumni are developing revolutionary technology that can deliver COVID-19 test results faster and more cheaply than ever before.

On Tuesday 14 September, Professor Georgiou and Dr Wong Jr will speak about their work to develop lifechanging technology in the face of a global pandemic and discuss the impact these technologies could have on reopening international travel and economies while protecting healthcare providers and patients.

Dr Wong Jr and Credo Diagnostics Biomedical have produced a real time point-of-care PCR test capable of detecting COVID-19 within 20 minutes. A successful example is the implementation at the Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, allowing arrivals with symptoms (fever with temperature of 38oC and above) to be tested with results delivered on-site in a rapid and affordable manner.

Professor Georgiou and his team are developing a smartphone based rapid test for COVID-19 which uses a cutting-edge ‘lab on a chip’ diagnostic platform that can be paired with a smartphone application, enabling real-time identification of infected individuals and surveillance to predict where virus hotspots might be.
