In order to tackle the energy crisis and climate change impacts, many countries have committed to net-zero emissions and aim to support the development of renewable energies. Ocean renewable energies (OREs) are clean and endless alternatives to fossil fuels in the vicinity of open water bodies where the majority of the human population lives. However, the available ocean resources are also affected by climate change. In this presentation, we discuss the different aspects of utilizing OREs and their advantages, and review a case study (northeast Asia with a focus on Japan) where the suitable areas for energy exploitation from the ocean waves were defined considering the long-term change in resources due to the changing climate by developing new criteria.
