Abstract

In the past 50 years, commercial aircraft have become much more fuel-efficient by using larger fans in turbofan engines, which reduces fuel consumption. Although larger engines will help save fuel, further efficiencies may be limited due to the increased weight.  

To counter this, there is ongoing work for the development of lighter materials and improved aerodynamics of these engines. Such technology will be critical for sustainable aviation, especially with the predicted high costs of new fuels. 

How much room for improvement remains? In this seminar, Dr Raul Vazquez will discuss how we can enhance ultra-high by-pass ratio engines and their prospects for the future.

About the speaker 

Raul is Engineering Fellow in Aerodynamics and Chief of Aerothermal Technology at Rolls-Royce. He is also Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Chairman of the European Turbomachinery Society (Euroturbo), and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College London. 

Raul has also been an invited lecturer to speak on aerodynamics and fluid dynamics of gas turbines at a number of prestigious universities and research Institutions. He has also been a keynote speaker at many international conferences.
