What is this event? This event aims to bring together researchers from ICR and Imperial to build joint PhD project proposals. This virtual event will provide an opportunity for researchers to briefly showcase their research and/or highlight their research needs to help connect researchers across institutions. 

Who is this event for? Potential supervisors considering applying for CRUK Convergence Science Centre (CSC) – Institute of Chemical Biology (ICB) CDT Non-clinical studentships, starting in the 2025/2026 academic year. It maybe that you have not previously considered applying your science to an cancer-focused challenges, but please do consider attending this event.

When? Wednesday 4th September, 13:00-16.00 on Microsoft Teams. The event will include an introduction from the Directors of the CSC and ICB, followed by flash presentations and time for virtual networking. 

How can I participate? Register to attend by completing the survey before Friday, 30th August to confirm your interest and attendance and indicate whether you would like to present your research or research interest. If you would like to present on the day, please prepare a short max. 2 slides (~5 minutes) summarising your expertise and biological interest.

What we are looking for? Following the event, we are looking for cross institutional PhD projects, involving at least one supervisor from both ICR and Imperial. The project should aim to integrate cancer research with chemical biology.

CRUK Convergence Science Centre Research themes:
Projects must address an unmet need in cancer which aligns with Centre’s research themes. i) Convergence Discovery Research, aiming to identify cancer vulnerabilities through the integration of Discovery Research and clinical materials, and ii) Interventional Science, covering technological innovations in early detection and diagnosis, novel interventions and therapy monitoring.  

Chemical Biology:
We define chemical biology as the development and application of molecular tools and techniques for biological and biomedical understanding, and industrial/clinical benefit. This brings together expertise from the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering) to support the development and translation of the next generation of molecular tools and technologies for making, measuring, modelling and manipulating molecular interactions in biological systems across multiple length scales.
