Microsoft Premonition: A platform for monitoring the biological environment
Microsoft Premonition is a platform for monitoring the biological environment, designed to provide early warning of emerging pathogens, pests and other biological threats. The platform is built on a network of robotic devices (‘biological weather stations’) that collect and analyze samples from the environment, a data lake which can ingest and harmonize multiple data streams, and a metagenomics pipeline that can identify the organisms present in a sample from genetic sequence data. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the Premonition platform and results from our early deployments, and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities associated with monitoring the biological environment in the context of disease threats, both natural and engineered, and climate change.
