Before joining Imperial College London, Andrea from the Philippines worked at a non-profit organisation, helping to tackle post-consumer plastic waste pollution. She found the experience incredibly fulfilling, but felt she needed to further her education and broaden her horizons to do even more for the causes she’s passionate about. Andrea shares how the diverse community at Imperial is supporting her journey, what unique and invaluable opportunities she’s had so far and why Imperial is the right place for her.

Applying to Imperial and the ASEAN-UK SAGE Women in STEM Scholarship

I decided to apply to Imperial because of its outstanding reputation in the field of STEM. The opportunity to study at such a prestigious institution was a dream, but it seemed financially out of reach until I discovered the ASEAN-UK SAGE Women in STEM Scholarship. This scholarship was a perfect match for my aspirations and provided the financial support I needed to pursue my studies abroad.

The application process for the scholarship was initially daunting, as I struggled with self-doubt about my qualifications. However, the encouragement from my mentors, friends, and family was invaluable. Their support helped me navigate the application process with confidence, highlighting the importance of community and mentorship, especially for women in STEM fields. The scholarship not only made studying at Imperial possible but also offered a network of like-minded individuals, which has been crucial in adapting to life in London. This community has enriched my postgraduate experience, providing both academic and personal support.

When searching and applying for scholarships, it's important to start by understanding your motivations and goals. Knowing your ‘why’ helps you find the best scholarships and programmes that align with your aspirations. Remember, you miss 100% of the opportunities you don't take – so just apply! Each application is a chance to learn and improve, and persistence can lead to success.

The Imperial community

Being part of Imperial's global community has been an enriching experience. I've had the opportunity to learn about diverse cultures and personalities, which has broadened my perspectives and opened my mind to innovative ways of thinking and problem-solving. Collaborating with the community has enhanced my academic journey and contributed to my personal growth, making my time at Imperial truly transformative.

I realised Imperial was the right place for me because of its unique focus on addressing real-world challenges, which aligns perfectly with my professional goals. The world-class education and the supportive, diverse community Imperial offers solidified my decision to apply here.

Starting my course was initially overwhelming due to the new academic environment and cultural adjustments but the extensive support system at Imperial – including academic, pastoral and professional development resources – made the transition smoother. Thanks to the social events my department organised during induction week, I connected with my peers from diverse backgrounds very early on and found a welcoming and supportive community.

My friends have been helping me navigate both academic and personal challenges – whether it's sharing our cultures with one another, exchanging study tips, or simply being there to listen, my friends have played a crucial role in my experience. Their encouragement and camaraderie have helped me to thrive in this new environment.

This sense of belonging has been the highlight of my Imperial experience and has been instrumental in my positive experience here.

London life as an international student

Living in London has been an exciting change from back home. The city is vibrant, with endless activities and a high quality of life. I particularly enjoy the abundance of green spaces, which is something I didn't have much of in my home country, and it provides a refreshing contrast in the city environment. I've also taken advantage of the many cultural events that are always happening across London and have been enjoying the diverse (and delicious!) food scene.

My advice for anyone thinking about moving to London is to embrace the experience and be kind and patient with yourself while you learn to adjust.

London postgraduate accommodation

I currently live in private accommodation in London. To find a suitable place, I searched online using platforms like Spareroom, Zoopla and Airbnb, and also explored recommendations from relatives living in London.

Imperial's Private Housing Masterclass and guides supported me in my search by providing valuable insights into the London housing landscape and helped me understand my rights as a tenant. The guide was helpful in narrowing down the areas to search for accommodation and ensuring I was well-informed about the rental process. The contract checking tool offered by Imperial was also very helpful in reviewing and understanding the terms of my rental agreement, giving me peace of mind as I settled into my new home.

My career plans

After graduation, I plan to work at the intersection of data science and policy, focusing on creating a circular economy. My goal is to contribute data-backed insights to inform policy decisions, potentially working with organisations like the United Nations (UN).

Imperial's Careers Service has been invaluable in supporting my career plans, offering support in enhancing my professional skills and connecting me with various companies. I regularly attend their career fairs and networking events, which have been beneficial in exploring opportunities. The Careers Service also organised a helpful session on working in the UN specifically, providing valuable insights and advice on how to enhance our profiles and CV. I would strongly recommend future Master's students take full advantage of the career resources Imperial provides, as they can significantly boost your employability and prospects.

Careers support from day one

Our Careers Service can help sharpen your competitive edge in a world top 10 city for graduate employment (QS Student Cities 2025).

My experience at Imperial has been a transformative journey that has expanded my horizons and sharpened my skills as a data scientist.

When applying to Imperial, it's important to approach the process with confidence and a proactive mindset. Don't hesitate to ask for help, whether it's from the school's admissions team or past students. They can share their thoughts and more information on the programme you’re interested in and help you determine if it's the right fit for you.

My final piece of advice would be to not feel intimidated! It's common to experience imposter syndrome, but it's important to have confidence in your abilities and achievements.

Believe in yourself, and don't hesitate to apply – embrace the opportunity and give it your best shot!
