Wednesday 30 September 2015 AGRI-Tech: Application of Physical Science to Agri-Science
Imperial College Show & Tell event, Agri-tech: Application of Physical Science to the Agri-sciences. Global demand for food is expected to increase by 50% by 2030 and to double by 2050. The challenge is to produce and supply enough safe and nutritious food in a sustainable way for a growing population, which is projected to reach 9 Billion by 2050. Food security has been identified as one of the main strategic priorities for future research funding. It is clear that research in a wide range of disciplines underpinning food security will be essential, if we are to address this serious problem. Physical science innovation (in e.g. chemistry, physics, mathematics & engineering) is able to tackle biological problems on a molecular level and in so doing will lead to the development of novel technologies that will address future agri-science needs.

We are delighted to invite you to attend a Question Time Style debate which asks: Is the global food system broken and can science fix it?” While supermarket shelves are piled high with foods from around the world at prices which seem within the means of the average shopper, the challenge that is facing society today might not seem instantly obvious to everyone….Take a closer look and it’s not hard to see the cracks in the system.
Wednesday 1 October 2014 SCI event: Biorationals – an effective solution to current and future crop protection problems?
With contributions from a number of international experts the conference will introduce new approaches to the commercially viable and environmentally friendly use of biorationals in crop production – but much more than a list of new products.
Biorationals already offer considerable opportunities when they are used alone on protected crops and in organic crop production. There is however a much greater potential for their use as components of integrated control systems often in combination with conventional chemical crop protection agents.
The BioResources Group of SCI has established an unsurpassed reputation in bringing forward the benefits of science to industry and providing communication platforms for important changes in policies and practical applications. This conference expects to set a benchmark for the future of crop protection.

Thursday 26 September 2013 Biological and Chemical Approaches Towards Combating Resistance in Agriculture
As a consequence of the growing world population and its changing dietary requirements, modern agriculture is facing an ever increasing challenge to maintain and increase food production. At the same time, growing resistance problems towards some agrochemicals are resulting in serious crop damage and the loss of important compounds to the farmer. If ignored, resistance will significantly reduce worldwide agricultural output at a time when yields need to be increasing. Biological research has a key role to play in addressing the resistance challenge by helping to understand resistance mechanisms and to identify new modes of action unaffected by resistance. Chemical research has an equally important role to play in terms of synthesizing new molecules which either overcome resistance problems in existing targets or have novel modes of action.
The objective of the conference is to showcase some of the recent scientific advances relevant to understanding and combating resistance and to promote scientific interactions between researchers in this field. The speakers will include leading experts in resistance research from both academia and industry.
