Innovations in material science, engineering, and microbiology have the potential to develop antimicrobial "smart" surfaces and materials to reduce contamination, especially in healthcare. These will be important solutions to combatting AMR.

• Professor Julian Jones: Biomaterials that can release ions that can: kill bacteria without harming other cells; or booth the body’s immune cells in the fight against infection
• Dr Gerald Larrouy-Maumus: Mycobacterium tuberculosis, bacterial pathogens, metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and lipidomics
• Professor Alexandra Porter: Interfaces between biomaterials and cells
• Professor Daryl Williams: Particulate materials and their surfaces
