March 2025

We bid farewell to the MSci students who have been a joy to work with over the past few months and hope to stay in touch!

February 2025

Anthony, YuChen and Chris have co-authored a new paper: "Understanding Hydrogen-X Redox Flow Battery Performance Through Modelling and Design of Experiments"

January 2025

Chris presented the group's fantastic research on the "Molecular and Cell Level Development of the Hydrogen-X Rechargeable Fuel Cell"  at the UK Redox Flow Battery Network 2025, at Queen Mary University, London.

Nothing quite like a late Christmas party!

December 2024

Anthony attended the final project meetings for Further-FC and Dolphin, held in Grenoble, Fr.

Ander attended the European Hydrogen week and can be seen here chatting at the Bramble Energy stand.

November 2024

Anthony attended the 2024 Energy Transition Research & innovation conference in Sao Paulo which was a great event for all involved.

Anthony spoke at the Royce Conference, held this year at the Core Technology Facility (Manchester), focusing on recent work within the group on the characterisation of electrocatalyst materials for the oxygen evolution reaction.

As a welcome for the new starters this year we headed to the local bowling alley for a couple of games.

October 2024

Michalis delivered both a poster and a presentation on his current work on Electrochemical Upgrading of Pyrolysis oil at the bp-ICAM annual conference held in the Midland Hotel in Manchester.

Michalis completed the Royal Parks Half Marathon run along with friends and family to raise money for the Blood Cancer UK organisation!

We hosted visit from BASF to take us through some of their recent progress in new materials for high temperature fuel cells.

September 2024

This month Anthony attended the 2nd consortium meeting of the AEMELIA project - Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis for highly efficient sustainable clean hydrogen production - that was held in the MATGENIX premises in Charleroi, Belgium.

A huge welcome to the MSci students Victoria, Yixin, Bayan, Paul and Alessandro! Also welcome to Alvia Yousuf who is starting a PhD in the group! 🎉

July 2024

Anthony was speaking at a UK-Vietnam collaborative event, to discuss Future Technologies for Net Zero 2050: UK and Vietnam. More information is available in an article here.

Mengjun delivered a fantastic presentation on "Investigating Active Sites in Non-precious Single-atom Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Fuel Cells" at the 2024 CSCST-SCI Conference at the University of Surrey.

👏👏👏 This month our MRes students Fidaus, Jiazheng and Yangzhe delivered their Project presentations, with Fidaus taking home 2nd place in the Best Talk of this year's cohort. Well done everyone!

This month we hosted a couple of visitors from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Our man in Tallinn has published a brilliant and important review paper "Design and Impact: Navigating the Electrochemical Characterization Methods for Supported Catalysts", covering the key methods used to measure intrinsic catalyst activity.

Mengjun travelled back to China to deliver a presentation on "Investigating Active Sites in Non-Precious Single-atom Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Fuel Cells" at the 2024 World Fuel Cell Conference. Having organised a large part of the 2023 WFCC, I'm sure it was nice to attend as just a speaker and give a fascinating talk. Upon returning, Mengjun also presented her work at the Imperial Battery Symposium. Very cool!

To raise for MacMillan, Jack and Michalis both competed in the Staff vs Students Charity football game, with varied levels of success.

A workshop themed “Future Technologies for Net Zero 2050: UK and Vietnam" was held at the Imperial College London (ICL) on July 12, gathering academics, scientists and researchers from the two countries with Anthony taking a prominent role in the discussion - you can read more on the website.

This month, Anthony, Lyra and Haiyi have completed a really important piece of work, entitled "Avoid Using Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) as an Electrolyte for Accurate OER Studies" which makes a useful contribution to the characterisation methods of electrolysis catalysts.

Anthony attended a the renowned Enowa-Kaust-Neom Hydrogen event.

June 2024

This month saw the Postgraduate Symposium in the Department of Chemistry - YuChen and Chris showed their best results alongside other PhD researchers.

We hosted a visit from Dr Hamilton Valeria, of the University of Sao Paulo, and a talk entitled The Role of Kinetic Instabilities in Electrocatalysis: The Electro-oxidation of Methanol on Platinum.

👏👏👏  Well done to the MSci students in the group YunChu, Nita, Haiyi and Chenrui for completing their projects!

May 2024

🥂 With graduation ceremonies taking place this month we are delighted to congratulate Mengjun, now Dr Gong, and Michalis and Junxi for their hard work and for the successful completion of their Master's courses.

Ander returned to Imperial College London for a week to work on a continuing collaboration with the University of Tartu, and it was great to have him with the group here again.

Games night social!

We are sadly saying goodbye to one of our veteran group members. Lyra I'm sure will go on to magnificent things, and we will stay in touch. To celebrate Lyra's time in the group as a PhD student and researcher we headed out for some pizza and shared some departing gifts.

April 2024

Mengjun also presented her current research work, in a short presentation entitled "Understanding Sulfur Reaction Mechanisms in Li-S Batteries: Electrokinetic Insights Through Cyclic Voltammetry in Coin Cells and Rotating Disk Electrodes" at the 2024 Faraday Conference. Impressive work as usual!

This month Ander presented his work on the floating electrode technique, at the University of Tartu in collaboration with Imperial College London. Also we see Ander proudly sporting the Imperial College logo at the conference tennis tournament, from his days as an MSci student in the group.

March 2024

This month we hosted a meeting with representatives of Airbus, who are of course also interested in cutting-edge hydrogen technology.

Chris and Anthony have written a new paper entitled "Methylene Blue in a High-Performance Hydrogen-Organic Rechargeable Fuel Cell" published in ACS Energy Materials!

February 2024

Antwerp University held their annual Electrocatalysis Winter School, at which Anthony gave a presentation on "Measurement of electrocatalyst activity at the electrolyte-gas interface: three-electrode and in-situ two electrode (fuel cell/electrolyser) measurements".

January 2024

For a late Christmas celebration we headed down the local bowling lanes.

YuChen presented his work on the H2-Mn system at the UK Flow Battery Network Conference held at QMUL.
