AB - A study of the radiative properties of atoms confined within micron-sized cavities is reported. An experiment undertaken to observe directly by spectroscopy London-van der Waals energy-level shifts, which are closely related to the strong suppression of spontaneous decay from an excited state, is described. This requires that the atoms be confined to a small region compared with the dimensions of the cavity. A technique for obtaining a hypercollimated beam is described. Direct spectroscopy of the level shifts in the confined atoms due to the walls of the cavity is under way.
