Measurement of the hydrogen 1S lamb shift

This paper is reports about the measuring of the Lamb shift of the 1st hydrogen ground state as a test of quantum electrodynamics using Doppler-free two photon absorption. Mid-way of the experiment, the 1S-2S transition with high resolution was observed. Presently, the statistical uncertainty of Lamb shift measurement is less than 10 ppm, comparable to the Lamb shift measurement in any system.

YbF - a new way to measure the electron electric dipole moment

Heavy diatomic 2Σ or 2Π molecules were considered to be spectaculary sensitive systems to search for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron. To devise a molecular beam experiment using this kind of molecule, a variety of candidate molecules were considered. The YbF compound was chosen at the molecular beam and the production and detection methods for the molecules were studied. Several chemical mixtures were utilized to measure YbF production efficiency. Using both the hot wire and laser induced fluorescence, YbF was detected. Narrow linewidth of the crossed laser molecular beam apparatus was utilized to determine the spin-rotation and hyperfine splitting constants of the YbF molecule.

Simulations of laser cooling in a penning trap

    , Pages: 3-4

Available information is often limited from ion trapping experiments about the effectiveness of the laser cooling and the exact state of motion of the trapped ions. For this reason, we have performed extensive simulations of the motion of ions experiencing laser cooling in a Penning trap. We are then able to use the results of the simulations both to interpret the experimental results we obtain and also to guide future experiments.

PRODUCTION OF MACROSCOPIC SCHRODINGER CAT STATES FROM WEAK QUANTIZED CAVITY FIELDS INTERACTING WITH ATOMS DRIVEN BY CLASSICAL FIELDS

, JOURNAL OF MODERN OPTICS, Vol: 41, Pages: {1625-1635}-{1625-1635}, ISSN: 0950-0340

We show that macroscopic superposition (Schrodinger cat) states of a quantized single-mode cavity field can be produced via the interaction of this field with a two-level atom which is driven by a classical field even for small initial intensities of the quantized cavity mode. We show that with a properly chosen driving field an almost pure superposition state with arbitrary amplitudes and phases of component states can be produced.

AMPLIFICATION OF MULTICOMPONENT SUPERPOSITIONS OF COHERENT STATES OF LIGHT WITH QUANTUM AMPLIFIERS

We analyze statistical properties of multicomponent superpositions of coherent states of light amplified by quantum-mechanical amplifiers with reduced quantum fluctuations. We show that sub-Poissonian (i.e., amplitude-squeezed) amplifiers can transform any initial superposition of coherent states of light into a nonclassical state with a high degree of sub-Poissonian photon statistics. Simultaneously the shape of the photon-number distribution of the initial state of light is preserved but shifted toward higher photon numbers. On the other hand, we show that phase-sensitive (i.e., quadrature-squeezed) amplifiers may preserve the initial reduction of quadrature fluctuations (quadrature squeezing). We show that by using amplifiers with reduced quantum noise one can, in principle, control the influence of the noise transferred from the amplifier to the system.

GENERATION OF PHASE-SENSITIVE NONCLASSICAL EFFECTS VIA DECAY OF LIGHT INTO A PHASE-INSENSITIVE ENVIRONMENT

    , PHYSICS LETTERS A, Vol: 186, Pages: {283-288}-{283-288}, ISSN: 0375-9601

We show that phase-sensitive nonclassical effects can be transiently produced via decay of a field mode into a heat bath. In particular, we analyze the time evolution of the fourth-order squeezing of the field mode and we show that under certain conditions the light field which initially was not fourth-order squeezed may exhibit this nonclassical effect. We have found general conditions under which the reduction of higher-order moments of quadrature operators can be observed and eventually the fourth-order squeezing can be produced.
