AB  - We present the analytical solution for a two-level system dressed by an intense laser field and discuss new phenomena arising under these conditions. We show that intense ultrashort laser pulses always break the symmetry of the two-level system, resulting in the generation of even-order harmonics of the incident light. Both the phase of the laser-induced polarization of the system and the emission spectrum can be controlled using experimentally accessible parameters. The control is sufficient to allow us to suppress odd and enhance even harmonics. We propose that phase control of nonlinear polarization can be used for quasi-phase matching of high-harmonic radiation.
