AB  - A new mechanism of atomic stabilization in the process of resonance ionization via Rydberg states is discussed. It is shown that strong resonance interaction of Rydberg states with a low lying state substantially suppresses ionization from this state and leads to the trapping of population at Rydberg states. Raman-type coupling of Rydberg states via continuum is shown to be essential for the effect even when bound-free interaction is weak.
