AB - The effect of ionization suppression (stabilization) of an atom in the field of an intense lager pulse with smooth time envelope is considered using a simple model. The spectrum of complex quasi-energies, conditions for the appearance of narrow quasi-energy levels in an intense field, and physical mechanism of ionization suppression are analyzed. Exact analytical solutions are found for two different types of laser pulse shapes, and requirements for pulse parameters ensuring ionization suppression not only for short, but also for long pulses are formulated.
