AB - An ion trapping and laser cooling system suitable for magnesium ions has been constructed. The system consists of a Penning ion trap contained within an all-metal vacuum system maintained below 3 × 10-19 mbar. Cooling to temperatures of <1 K has been achieved for a large cloud of ions. Single magnesium ions have been trapped and cooled, and quantum jumps have been observed. Quantum jumps in the odd isotope of magnesium (25Mg+) have been simulated. Preliminary results suggest that as well as quantum jumps between the two levels equivalent to the 24Mg+, there are two further types of quantum jump. From experimental observations of 25Mg+ in the trap, the pumping rates between different hyperfine levels due to the laser can be determined and compared with both the predictions of the model and the results for 25Mg+.
