Update 14 August 2024

In recent days some members of our community have experienced abhorrent racial and religious hatred and hostility—including Islamophobia—in their local communities. This is unacceptable.

Imperial will stand in solidarity against all forms of violence and hatred, and we will do everything we can to ensure Imperial remains a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone in our diverse community.

We should all be mindful of how our colleagues and students are feeling and what they are experiencing. Please continue to check in with those around you. The compassion, empathy, and support we all show each other is the test of a strong, caring community where we all share a sense of belonging.

We strongly encourage individuals to seek support and flexibility from their workplace if they need it. Colleagues, team leaders, and managers are empowered to fully support their colleagues. This includes by inviting conversations, listening to their concerns and providing flexibility, and by signposting where they can report incidents and get support.

More information about the support available to our Imperial community is below. This includes Report + Support which can be used to tell us in confidence about any bullying or harassment experienced or witnessed in the staff and student community.

To everyone in our Imperial community,

You will be aware of the violence that has erupted in parts of the United Kingdom following the abhorrent events in Southport. We reject violence as a means to any end and insist that such actions are against the values we share at Imperial.

We are determined that such activity should not spread to our university. While we are not aware of any incidents immediately affecting our community, we would like to remind everyone at Imperial of the measures we have in place to ensure safety and security on our campuses, what support is available to enable you to remain safe, and how to report incidents.

We are determined that Imperial remains a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for every member of our community.

  • Community Safety and Support team: The campus teams are available at all times in our buildings and halls of residence. They can be contacted directly at any time by means of the SafeZone app, or in one of the campus offices (during working hours). The teams can also supply individual panic alarms for staff and students.
  • SafeZone: This free app shares your location and profile directly with the Community Safety and Support Team to enable them to respond swiftly.
  • Report + Support: You can use our Report + Support tool to tell us in confidence about any bullying or harassment experienced or seen in the staff and student community.
  • Health and wellbeing support for students and staff: We have tailored support services for our student and staff communities to help you feel secure.

At Imperial, we must stand as one against all forms of violence and hatred.

The compassion and support you show each other in difficult times is the true test of a strong, caring community.

Thank you.

Hugh Brady, President, Imperial College London

Ian Walmsley, Provost, Imperial College London
