The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) Sustainability Advisory Committee is set out to help facilitate improvement to, and raise awareness of, sustainability initiatives across FoM. The Group will work to encourage, develop and champion approaches within the Faculty to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, including consumption of energy, water, plastics and monitoring purchasing of products and services to ensure they meet the sustainability criteria and improve the biodiversity of our campuses. Ensuring alignment with the overall Imperial sustainability strategy and transition.

The Advisory Group reports to:

  • Campus Development and Management Group (CDMG)
  • Faculty Health Safety and Environment Committee
  • College Sustainability Strategy Committee (via CDMG & Frank Kelly FoM representative)

  • Campus Directors - feed information from relevant campus groups ad hoc basis.

Terms of Reference

  • To engage with and report to the Campus Development and Management Group (CDMG).
  • To maintain oversight of sustainability developments and initiatives within the Faculty and act as an academic championing and coordinating body to support progress in sustainable practice in the Faculty.
  • Be a source of cascading information and promoting sustainability across the FoM, working with departments, campus directors and central university teams.
  • Identify key sustainability indicators and hotspots requiring priority action.
  • Gather and disseminate best practice examples and promote sustainability as a mainstream practice across the FoM.
  • Work with key stakeholders across FoM/the university to quantify emission data. Making recommendations on changes to reduce emissions including policies, processes and infrastructure to attain sustainability goals.

Member position & roles

Chair / Head of Infrastructure Operations (Dr Sharron Stubbs)

To ensure the FoM Sustainability Advisory Committee functions effectively. Making and/or channelling decisions to the appropriate forums and ensuring actions are recorded and completed.

To provide input from a Faculty infrastructure operations perspective and act as a conduit to and from the FoM health and safety team. To provide detailed knowledge and report on the requirements of the Equipment Users Group.

FoM Representative on Imperial's Sustainability Strategy Committee (Professor Frank Kelly)

To update on progress with sustainability initiatives under development from a university perspective and provide input on sustainability issues.

Representatives from FoM (sustainability champions); from departments / campuses      

To provide effective co-ordination between departments / campuses. Providing a bi-directional flow of information, with input to or oversight of significant operations, facilities, staff and other significant links to sustainability. Deliver relevant information from individual departments / campuses, creating a forum for discussion and decision making. 

Head of Space Programme (Dr Gareth Hyde)

To provide in-depth knowledge and strategic insight on the various site specific activities and developments.  

Representative from Estates (Mark Wilkinson)            

To provide detailed knowledge on the operational requirements for the capital projects on various campuses, with specific relevance to sustainability.

Representative from Research (Dr Chrystalla Orphanides)

To provide in-depth knowledge of requirements from a research perspective from funding and grant body stakeholders regarding sustainability standards and expectations.

Campus Liaison, Engagement and Planning Coordinator / Meeting Secretariat (Amy Cock)

To provide assistance to FoM sustainability advisory committee inclusive of arranging meetings, taking notes, supporting programme documentation updates and delivery of group objectives / actions.

To support Chair (Sharron Stubbs) and act as main point of contact for campus directors.  

Sustainability Programme Manager (Will Gee)

To update and advise on developments from Imperial sustainability strategy, highlighting progress of activities on project trackers. To provide insight on other Faculty initiatives and review opportunities to share best practice both within and outside the university with neighbouring universities. 

Director of Information and Planning (Ms Rosie Shaw) – optional

To provide advice and support relating to processes associated with information initiatives and planning.
