Sustainability Fortnight: 24 February - 7 March 2025
Imperial College London’s Sustainability Fortnight will take place from 24 February – 7 March 2025!
Over the two weeks, staff and students will have the opportunity to join in exciting workshops and interactive events, and find out what Imperial is doing to reduce its own environmental impacts and how to get involved.
Organised by the central Sustainability Hub and Imperial College Union, this year’s Sustainability Fortnight centres on the themes of Arts & Culture, Climate Justice, Sustainable Consumption, and Nature & Wellbeing.
Highlights include gardening sessions, quizzes, Sustainability Fairs and a swap shop.

Sustainability Fair | 11:00-14:00 | Sherfield Concourse Foyer, South Kensington campus
If you’re interested to learn more about living sustainably then you’ll want to visit our Sustainability Fair! This event will be your chance to meet the groups who are championing sustainability at Imperial and learn from them and others, how you can make small changes in your everyday life to be more sustainable. No need to book – just come along and take part in the interactive games! Open to all Imperial students and staff.
Green Impact Showcase | 15:00-16:00 | SALC 7, South Kensington campus
Want to learn more about Green Impact? Want to see what other Green Impact teams have been up to this year? Pop along to our Green Impact Showcase where you can connect with current members and exchange ideas and initiatives ahead of the re-launch in mid-March. Open to all Imperial staff and PhD students. Led by the global NGO Climate Fresk, this engaging 3-hour workshop brings climate science to life through collaborative learning based on IPCC reports. Using an innovative card game, participants work together to visualize climate systems while developing leadership, teamwork, and consensus-building skills. London Student Sustainability Conference | 10:00-18:00 | University of Westminster and online
This year’s London Student Sustainability Conference (LSSC25) will be hosted at University of Westminster. LSSC25 welcomes students, staff, professionals, and members of the public to the seventh year of the conference. LSSC25 has always been student-led, with research and projects being exhibited through presentations, posters, and workshops. LSSC25 offers attendees the opportunity to find out more about the incredible climate and sustainability work and research being undertaken by students across the city of London.
Gardening Session | 12:00-14:00 | Secret Garden, South Kensington campus
Join the Property Division (Head Gardener Lucy & Move Imperial) to support the gardening and greening projects on campus. Activities in the secret garden will include cutting back self-seeding ash and holly bushes, clearing pathways around the perimeter of the garden and digging to prepare for rose beds to renovate for spring and summer.
All equipment will be provided at the session and don't worry if you are new to gardening, guidance will be given.
Please wear clothing that you don't mind getting muddy - we suggest bringing a change of clothes.
The sessions are drop-in so if you can only come for half an hour your support would still be greatly appreciated!

Join your Silwood Sustainability Champions for a recycled glass painting session. Bring in your used glass pots and jars to decorate and then take home to repurpose as pen pots, storage or perhaps for a tea light! Refreshments will be provided. Making research more sustainable – funding, best practice & next steps | 14:00-15:00 | Online
Join us for an online session exploring how we can embed sustainability into research within the Faculty of Medicine. In the session we will, provide practical guidance on making research more sustainable, discuss the link between funding and sustainability initiatives and highlight best practices and success stories from our FoM community. Join South Ken Zen+ for a walking tour this Sustainability Fortnight! Take part in a unique opportunity to learn about how climate change is impacting our neighbourhood and what the organisations and institutions here are doing about it. Participants will explore a couple of hidden refuges for nature in the neighbourhood and also hear about how London's plants and animals are being affected by climate change. It's an open discussion to share ideas on how to make the neighbourhood more nature positive and fit for the future. Open to all Imperial students and staff.

'Humanity, Technology & Meaningful Progress' opens a critical dialogue about our relationship with technology, our understanding of progress, and our ability to imagine alternative futures. We face what many are calling the Metacrisis - a convergence of economic, social, and environmental challenges, accelerated by our current technological trajectory. In this interactive session, we'll explore how reimagining technology's design and humanity's relationship with it could offer a path toward reshaping our collective future. Climate Art Prize Workshop | 12:00-13:30 | SALC 7, South Kensington campus
Learn how to design a piece of art, drawing attention to the climate crisis, with a professional artist and climate scientist. Run by the Grantham Institute’s Grantham Climate Art Prize team, this workshop will give insights into how to create eye catching designs and motivational messages as well as provide the chance to learn more about the climate emergency and ways to live more sustainably. Participants can work individually or in groups and there will be a range of materials on offer. They can create a poster highlighting one of the Grantham Institute’s 9 things you can do about climate change or design an entry for the Grantham Climate Art Prize with the theme Design the Future. Want to learn about Imperial's latest sustainability tool? Join Harriet Wallace, Director of Sustainability, Prof. Jem Woods and Dr. Qiao Yan Soh for a demo of the new Imperial Transition Pathways Explorer. Discover how the Explorer will help Imperial to reduce its carbon footprint by investigating the impacts of different technological and behavioural options for decarbonisation. Join our upcycling and mending workshop where the Imperial Stitchers can assist you with making basic clothing repairs and modifications. Imperial Climate Action are hosting an event - with free food and drinks - to discuss what climate action might look like for staff, students, and alumni in 2025. We're inviting members from a range of student societies and departments to talk about how climate affects them, whether that is the inequitable effects on women, rising sea levels affecting island nations, or heat and infectious diseases damaging public health, climate affects groups in many different ways. The Researchers’ Society is delighted to invite you to a free film screening of ‘X Trillion’ followed by a Q&A with one of the expedition scientist, Rowan Henthorn, for the Imperial Sustainability Fortnight. This feature documentary follows the pioneering all-women ‘eXXpedition North Pacific’ to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The feature debut by Eleanor Church follows the gruelling journey of eXXpedition’s all-women crew led by Emily Penn, as they sail 3,000 miles across the North Pacific Ocean through the densest accumulation of ocean plastic on the planet - in order to make the unseen, seen. The perfect opportunity to stock up on clothes and other items without cost to your wallet or the environment. There will be an opportunity to drop off items (in decent condition please) before the event (date/time tbc) in exchange for credit to use at the swap. You also don't need to have donated to come along - you can buy items on the day for as little as £1. No need to sign up, just pop along! Open to all Imperial students.

Join us for a mending workshop: don’t get rid of warn clothes, instead learn the art of repairing garments with threads, patches, and creative techniques. In the workshop, you will: Discover various mending techniques such as darning and patching, learn how to make repairs both functional and decorative and bring new life to your favourite clothes whilst reducing waste. No prior sewing experience necessary, all materials provided but feel free to bring any items you would like to mend plus any sewing kits you already have. No need to book just come along!

Join the School of Sustainability for an insightful panel event on Careers in Sustainability, with alumni from Energy Futures Lab, the Institute for Molecular Science and Engineering and the Grantham Institute, sharing their experiences and advice. The paneel includes: Yujia Du - Career and Leadership coach and Founder of The Climate Circle, Isabelle Glotman - Investment Associate at Octopus Energy, Victor Riesgo Gonzalez - PDRA at the University of Oxford (Dept of Chemistry), Kieran Brophy – Research Lead, Sovereign Climate at London Stock Exchange Group, Neil Grant – Senior Expert at Climate Analytics.
