Course Overview

This course provides an introduction to the Arabic script, everyday vocabulary, the basic grammar structures of the language and the Arab culture. By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate in Arabic on simple everyday topics.

During the first few weeks of the course the Arabic script is introduced. The emphasis of the course is on developing the your communicative ability in a range of situations. Some reading and writing skills are then practised and extended throughout the course. The basic elements of Arabic grammar are introduced to enable you to understand the structure of the language.

Right from the beginning and throughout the course, Standard Spoken Arabic is used when practising oral skills. The emphasis is on enhancing oral as well as the reading skills.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course you will be better prepared to:

  • greet people; introduce yourself and others, provide some basic information about yourself and the members of your family;
  • read numbers and be able to count in Arabic, know the days of the week and the months of the year;
  • ask and give directions;
  • order a meal in a restaurant and read a basic menu;
  • know the basic geography and culture of the Middle East
  • describe things and people
  • read at a basic level aspects of Arabic script.

Teaching and Learning Approach

The teaching and learning approach for this course combines tutor-led instruction, group activities, and independent study supported by individual guidance from the tutor. Classes are conducted face-to-face in a classroom setting and utilise diverse teaching methods, including presentations, multimedia resources, class discussions, and interactive activities. These methods are selected to engage students, accommodate varied learning styles, and support effective understanding of the subject matter. The approach is also designed to recognise and be responsive to the diverse experiences, backgrounds, identities, and cultural perspectives represented within the student cohort, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
