Course Overview

This course is designed to elevate your language skills to a higher level by developing  further the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing with an emphasis on oral skills.

Focusing on increasingly complex grammar, vocabulary expansion, and deeper cultural insights, the course enables you to engage in increasingly complex conversations, enhance your writing skills, and gain a better understanding of Japanese society and culture.

By the end of the course, students will be able to engage in detailed spoken and written everyday conversations on various topics including daily life, hobbies, current events and contemporary social issues using more complex grammatical structures and expressions. This will include different conjugation patterns, such as te-form, nai-form, plain (dictionary) form and ta-form.

Required Previous Experience (if any)

You should have completed the imperial after:hours Japanese 2 course or have equivalent experience.

Required Reading Material or Special Equipment Needed (if any)

None required.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course you will be better prepared to:

  • engage in increasingly sophisticated and complex conversations using Japanese
  • be able to use Hiragana and Katakana fluently both in writing and reading
  • use a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical constructs;
  • have a basic knowledge of Kanji.

Teaching and Learning Approach

The teaching and learning approach for this course combines tutor-led instruction, group activities, and independent study supported by individual guidance from the tutor. Classes are conducted face-to-face in a classroom setting and utilise diverse teaching methods, including presentations, multimedia resources, class discussions, and interactive activities. These methods are selected to engage students, accommodate varied learning styles, and support effective understanding of the subject matter. The approach is also designed to recognise and be responsive to the diverse experiences, backgrounds, identities, and cultural perspectives represented within the student cohort, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
