We have a very special opportunity this summer to join the celebrated garden historian, Debbie Trentham, on a series of guided historical tours around three of the most interesting public gardens in London - Kensington Gardens, Kew Gardens and Battersea Park.

Author of the new book, Botanic Gardens of the World, Debbie will lead us on an exploration into the way these gardens reflected, and continue to embody, the growth of gardens in Britain, from their earliest origins as botanical gardens designed to grow herbs for medicine and private pleasure gardens for the aristocracy, to encyclopaedic collections of world plants and spaces for the wider public to enjoy.

Weaving together the histories of gardens, art and society, with stories of some of the key people involved in creating these gardens, Debbie's enthusiasm for garden history and knowledge of her subject is infectious, promising us a series of fascinating and exciting days out.

There are three sessions and you can either sign up for all three or for individual sessions. These are:

  • Kensington Gardens: Wednesday 7 May 2025 - 10:30 to 16:00 (morning at Imperial College)
  • Kew Gardens: Wednesday 14 May 2025 - 10:30 to 16:00 (all day at Kew)
  • Battersea Park: Wednesday 21 May 2025 - 10:30 to 16:00 (all day at Battersea Park)

Please bear in mind these are all large gardens and we will be walking around the grounds, which might in places include rough ground.

The sessions are open to all and you do not need any previous knowledge of garden history or art history to join the classes.

The number of persons on the classes is capped at no more than 15 people per Day School.
