The period after 1945 in Europe provided a great opportunity to create a new world. The experience of war convinced many that there was need for change and greater equality among those who fought in the war and those who supported them.
On this course we join Dr Sheila Lecoeur to explore some of the historical events which had the meaningful impact on people’s lives in Europe after the end of the Second World War. Film clips will bring the post-war world alive and show how exciting new ideas brought dramatic changes to the lives of many.
We will also the discuss the economic, social and political obstacles to innovative policies and how these were overcome. This was a period of major protest movements, such as those against nuclear weapons and the Vietnam War, and we will examine how the newly expanded student population led to clashes with the authorities and led to major changes in thinking.
The Cold War will be analysed and discussed in its historical context and we will examine the events which brought it to a close.
The course is a history course and so we will look at all topics, including contemporary events, through the prism of history and discussion and participation is welcome.
