Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) was one of the great painters of the Victorian art world. A key member of the Aesthetic Movement, in his large-scale figure paintings he sucessfully combined European and British traditions of academic painting, whilst also pointing forward to the modern art world.
Yet Leighton was also an accomplished landscape painter, not only incorporating landscape into the backgrounds of his major works, but also painting small scale landscape works, en plein air and in front of the subject, often on his travels to Europe and the Middle East.
In this short course, delivered by experts from across the country, including Tate Britain, the University of Birmingham and Sotheby's Institute of Art, we explore aspects of Leighton's landscape painting and how it fitted into the wider art world at the time, to coincide with the exhibition "Leighton and Landscape", opening at Leighton House, London, in November 2024.
The course will be held at Leighton House, giving opportunities to view the exhibition each week in light of the new information delivered by our world-class Leighton experts.
Aimed at a general audience, no previous experience of art, design or art history is needed, and all welcome.
