Join Jennifer Wallis this autumn at the historic Sambourne House for a fascinating journey into Victorian domestic life. Each week, we will explore a different room in the home, uncovering how changing ideas about family, comfort, and society shaped the way people lived in the 19th century.
What did ‘home’ mean to the Victorians? How did new technologies, shifting social roles, and design movements transform everyday life? Through lively discussions and real-life examples, we’ll examine the evolving function and decoration of key rooms, from the dining room—where class and consumption took centre stage—to the bathroom, where sanitation reforms changed lives.
On the course we will discover both technological innovations and changes in artistic taste, and delve into Victorian attitudes to love and marriage in the bedroom, explore the roles of servants, children, and guests, and discover how home life differed across social classes.
Whether you’re interested in history, art, literature, or design, this course offers an engaging and accessible way to bring the Victorian home to life.
All sessions will take place at Sambourne House in Kensington.
All welcome and no prior knowledge is required.
