The Building Safety Act (BSA) outlines stringent safety measures for residential buildings, especially those over 18 meters tall or with 7 or more floors. It mandates detailed documentation of building design, construction, maintenance, and alterations. We have been working with the HSE to ensure that our buildings comply with these measures.
As the building freeholder, Imperial bears responsibility for ensuring compliance with the Act and the safety of the building. A key part of the new legislation is the establishment of a Resident Engagement Strategy (RES) is to set out how we’ll communicate about building safety decisions, how we’ll collect and use your opinions, and how we’ll measure and review participation in these building safety decisions.
Engaging our community
Our buildings are home to a diverse population, including first year undergraduates, postgraduate students, Imperial Key Workers, Imperial staff and private residents. In some of our residences we work in partnership with third-party management companies to manage day-to-day operations and uphold safety standards, including how to communicate with residents.
Third-party management strategies
These management companies have created Resident Engagement Strategies that detail how they engage with residents regarding building safety decisions, gather feedback, and ensure participation. Residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with their policy to understand how to effectively communicate concerns or comments regarding building safety matters.
Imperial-managed strategies
In the residences where we manage day-to-day operations, we have consulted with our residents directly to create our engagement strategy that meets the needs of the occupiers. These strategies are designed to:
- Engage: Involve residents in safety decisions.
- Inform: Keep residents updated on important safety information.
- Empower: Enable residents to provide feedback and participate actively in safety measures.

Reporting safety concerns
Any safety concerns should initially be reported to your hall management team through the standard reporting channels for your accommodation as outlined in the relevant Resident Engagement Strategy.
In the event that residents feel these safety concerns have not been satisfactorily addressed, you are encouraged to submit a report via the Residents Safety Report form. This report is sent to the Imperial staff member or team responsible for the building.
