creation and tiles

Create an exam in SEW

To secure an exam for students using the Safe Exam Workspace software, please follow the steps to create a new exam via the instructor dashboard.

Important: Requests for new secure apps and pre-configured tiles should be submitted to ICT at least six weeks in advance of a familiarisation session or practice exam.

Requesting new pre-configured tiles

The available pre-configured tiles have been created for the departments currently taking part in the SEW pilot period.  Once the pilot activity has completed it will be possible to request new tiles via the ICT Service Desk.

If you are taking part in the pilot and need a new tile setup, please consult the pilot representative in your faculty.

secure apps

Secure apps

Secure apps are desktop applications that will be available for the student to use in the Safe Exam Workspace. Examples can include (but not limited to) Microsoft Word, Excel and Matlab.

Please Note: There is a lead time required to use secure apps, which means that exams that use these apps will not be ready to take instantly. Different apps require different lead times due to the time needed for Schoolyear to provision the secure app to your exam environment.

More information on adding secure apps to your exam are available in the Schoolyear help centre.

edit exams and wiseflow

How to edit exams

Exam settings can be edited after they have been created by:

  1. Opening the Schoolyear dashboard
  2. going to Exams
  3. Click on the title of your exam
  4. In the top right corner of the screen, select 'Edit Exam'

For more information on settings that can be customised after creation please see the Schoolyear help centre for a full guide on the change exam settings widget.

Building the exam content using WISEflow

The content of the exam, including questions and submission instructions, is set in an online exam application separate to SEW such as WISEflow. This application is then added to the allow list for the student to access during the exam via the SEW settings as detailed above.

Please ensure the exam content is created prior to the exam in the online exam application, including setting up the flow (if using WISEflow as the test application) and providing access to the flow for the relevant students.

Once students have started their exam it is important that they save their work regularly within the online exam application as the SEW environment will not store their work, in the unlikely event of a device failing during the exam time, it may be possible to restart on a different device. However, work will be lost unless it is saved within the online exam system.

Testing your exam setup as a student

You can download the Safe Exam Workspace app to test an exam as the students would see it prior to the start of an exam, by following the steps provided on the student help pages for using SEW.
