This programme is six-month job for Early Career Researchers wanting to dip their toes in the world of HPC and RSE. This program gives them exposure to working as an RSE and working alongside the HPC system administrators and user support staff.

It provides the opportunity to work with both The RSE Team and the Research Computing Platforms teams.

We are enthusiastic about this programme, it is a great training and career development opportunity for the participants, and it expands the pool of RSE and HPC-aware researchers in the wider community.

Programme Structure

The programme begins by immediately contributing to projects with the RSE team. In this time, they learn software development best practises, how to work collaboratively on code, and improve their general software development skills while working on world-leading research.

They then move on to RCS Platforms team where they learn about HPC Infrastructure, optimising software to run on the HPC and the essential skill of user support. This includes opportunities to be part of the ICICLE collaboration with Intel and Lenovo to deliver higher quality and more sustainable HPC.

After getting an experience of both teams in the first 2-3 months, there is then a lot of flexibility with where the participant wants to focus their time. They are free to choose to continue working with both teams, or shift to specialising in one area for the remaining few months.

Testimonials

"An amazing opportunity to learn from professional python developers. I will definitely be able to take what I've learned during the experience back to my research group and develop better projects."
"It’s been great! Really happy with what I managed to learn in a short amount of time. I had a lot of fun working on projects and getting to know the team. I think the way that you guys work (daily standups, allocating issues, discussing all the projects together) makes it really easy to get up and running quickly and feel part of the team."
"I certainly feel like a far more competent software engineer than before, and would be confident to apply for software engineering or RSE jobs."

Next round

The next round of the programme is due to be advertised towards the end of 2024. Check back here for updates, also keep an eye on the Imperial ICT Jobs Vacancies.
