Queen's Tower reflected in nearby buildings

What's happening at the Queen's Tower

You may have noticed Imperial’s iconic Queen’s Tower has been wrapped in scaffolding for the last few months. The reason for this is that the 138 year old tower is undergoing some much needed maintenance to its stonework and copper roof.

Redevelopment of the Great Hall

The Great Hall was built as part of the College Block, now known as the Sherfield building, in the late 1960s. The new buildings were opened on 27 November 1969 by Queen Elizabeth II. Starting in April 2025 the Great Hall is going to be redeveloped so that when it is not being used for events, it can be converted into three teaching spaces.

Completed projects

New student spaces at South Kensington campus

As part of the South Kensington Redevelopment programme, levels 3, 4 and 5 of the Sherfield Building underwent refurbishment in Summer 2025 to create new student spaces. Read more about this completed project.

Room for change: The reimagining of Sherfield Level 5

Transformation of Sherfield level 5 from an uninspired office setting to a 'Living Lab' to trial modern and sustainable ways of working. In the summer of 2025 the space was repurposed into a bespoke facility to house our student counselling service.

The redevelopment of Ex Libris café

Ex Libris café on the Hammersmith Hospital Campus reopened in August 2025 following an extensive redevelopment. Read more about this completed project.

Silwood solar panel switch-on

As part of Imperial's journey to Carbon Net Zero by 2040, Silwood Park Campus has become a key location for solar panel installation. Read more about this project which was completed in February 2025.
