Imperial Coaches are a fully trained cross-section of Imperial staff who take on coaching assignments in addition to their main job roles.  There are currently around 40 Imperial coaches from a wide range of academic and professional services roles within Imperial who bring a range of experience and insight to the coaching role.

To ensure a high standard of coaching, all coaches have attended the Imperial Coach Development Programme, and 25 of them have obtained the nationally-recognised coaching accreditation, the ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Level 5 in Coaching and Mentoring.  All coaches attend CPD events and coaching supervision twice a year. Coaching standards are in line with guidelines set by the European Coaching and Mentoring Council EMCC) and Imperial coaches adhere to the EMCC Code of Ethics.

Imperial coaches use a combination of observation, high-quality questioning, effective listening and constructive challenge to create a conversation designed to support the coachee’s thinking and action-planning.

  • Be motivated and committed to the process
  • Come to a coaching session with some idea of what they want to focus on
  • Contribute to conversations openly and honestly
  • Be open-minded
  • Challenge themselves
  • Set goals and take action
