An Imperial student solo kayaked 1,000km in 23 days along the river Danube from Ulm in Germany to Budapest in Hungary during July to early August. The course of the journey was through Bavaria in Southern Germany, across the length of northern Austria via Vienna, then to Bratislava and along the Slovakia-Hungary border, before finally turning south towards Budapest in Hungary. The endurance challenge involved kayaking at an average of 50km a day over 12 hours each day. The Danube is a navigable river designed for ships and leisure craft, so kayaking the river added additional logistical and physical difficulty. An expedition kayak rated for the sea was chosen for the journey as this provided the required storage to live off the water, and camp, for over three weeks. The kayak was ordered and collected in Germany at the start of the expedition.
In addition to funding provided by the Exploration Board this expedition was supported by the Lord Mayor's 800th Anniversary Awards Trust and the Old Centralians' Trust.
