Squamish is situated on Canada's western coast sitting at the mouth of Howe Sound a vast expanse of water which traverses British Columbia connecting the town with the Pacific Ocean. In all directions Alpine foothills spill into this basin in huge swathes of pristine granite punctuated by pine forests and waterfalls. Many climbing routes can be found on these walls of every conceivable style length and difficulty, making this a popular training ground for climbers of all abilities.
The Stawamus Chief is a collection of three granite peaks that rise 700m from the water to tower above the town of Squamish and is one of the largest granite monoliths in the world. During the summer nine Imperial students camped at the base of “The Chief” and undertook a series of multi-pitch and multi-day climbing routes on the peaks including Angels Crest, Cannabis Wall, Grand Wall, Ultimate Everything, and Snake. The group also completed routes on Mount Harbrich including Life in Space and Earthshine. Once they became accustomed to the North American grading systems for the climbs, every member of the team was challenged by the varied routes that they undertook, with some undertaking multi-day pitches for the first time.
