How do you constructively and sensitively engage audiences with controversial, complex or emotive areas of research? 

In this session, you will explore different perspectives and be introduced to practical approaches, enabling you to consider why and how public engagement can support open dialogue around these topics. Through discussion of real examples and practice, you will build your confidence in approaching complex topics such as climate science, nuclear energy, or animal research. 

Key areas covered

This session will cover:

  • What makes a research topic controversial, complex or emotive for public audiences
  • Benefits of public engagement within the context of controversial and sensitive topics
  • Tips and advice for communicating with the public around these areas; e.g. how to involve a wide range of perspectives
  • The research process and the role of evidence   

Who is this session for?

This session is available to Imperial College staff members and doctoral students who have attended our Core Engagement Masterclass or similar training, or have equivalent experience in carrying out public engagement.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this session, you will be better able to:

  • Recognise the broader social context of research which can make topics sensitive, difficult or controversial  
  • Interpret the perspectives of public audiences in your engagement activities  
  • Use facilitation and engagement approaches to discuss sensitive research  
  • Develop engagement activities with sensitive or controversial research

This session is run  in person on our South Kensington campus. If you are unable to attend in-person or would like to explore the options for training at an alternative campus, please contact societal_engagement@imperial.ac.uk so that we can assess demand and discuss your needs.
